PSI Implements Real-Time RFID Asset Tracking Solution for Public Transportation

RFID and Wi-Fi solutions to track buses and trams at Stuttgart Strassenbahnen AG

Berlin, 4 March 2009 – PSI subsidiary PSI Transcom GmbH is implementing a wireless RFID real-time tracking system at the Stuttgart Strassenbahnen AG (SSB) together with RMS.LU S.A. of Luxembourg. The solution is comprised of AeroScout Wi-Fi tags, chokepoint exciters, the Cisco® Wireless Location Appliance and PSI’s depot management software. It will be utilized to coordinate the maintenance of buses and trams in the main depot.

RFID real-time tracking of buses and trams in a depot is innovative in Germany in the field of local public transportation. With this solution, vehicles can be precisely located in garages or in expansive outdoor parking areas. Already successfully employed in automotive, manufacturing and logistics sectors, the system is designed to use existing Cisco Unified Wireless Network in order to achieve a high level of cost-effectiveness for the transportation company.

SSB AG is one of the largest and most modern local public transportation companies in Germany. The company has been providing mobility to approximately 890,000 residents in the SSB region for over 130 years. The depot management system implemented by PSI handles central administration of all SSB depots, workshops and parking areas. The system allows for cross-company dispatching and fleet maintenance scheduling for all five depots. SSB will achieve significant savings through the utilization of the PSI solution, which relies on precise vehicle location information obtained via AeroScout RFID tags working in conjunction with the Cisco Wireless Location Appliance and the Cisco Unified Wireless Network.

The Cisco® Wireless Location Appliance simultaneously tracks thousands of devices from directly within a wireless local area network (WLAN) bringing the power of a cost-effective, high-resolution location solution to critical applications such as high-value asset tracking, IT management, and location-based security.

PSI AG develops and integrates complete solutions, on the basis of its own software products, for the management of energy networks (electricity, gas, oil, heat, water), cross-company production management (metals, automotive, mechanical engineering, logistics) and infrastructure management for telecommunications, transport and safety. PSI was founded in 1969 and currently employs more than 1,100 persons in the group.
